Start with the back of the match cover and gently bend back the ends of the staple with a very small screwdriver or pair of tweezers. I collect matchcovers and matchbox labels pre and also make artistic displays with damaged or bobtailed covers. Anyone wanting to do get rid of their collection or hoard, please let me know before you throw them away. I live near Portland, Oregon.
